  • Background: The use of mechanical ventilation in intensive care unit in patients potentially occurrence of complications of Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP). VAP can be prevented by using the antibiotic and antiseptic as oral decontamination. One of the prevention with oral decontamination is using chlorhexidine. Objective: To discover the effect of chlorhexidine as oral hygiene on the number of oropharyngeal bacteria in patients with mechanical ventilator. Method: The sample consisted of 15 patients using the mechanical ventilator in the ICU RSUP Dr. Kariadi Semarang that meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria then each was given chlorhexidine 0,2% as much as 25 ml every 12 hours for 48 hours. Every sample is taken secretions from oropharynx before and after treatment, for later examination in counting the number and types of oropharyngeal bacteria. Results: The result of statistical analysis test with paired t-test showed significant difference (p<0,05) in the number of oropharyngeal bacteria.before and after treatment. From the analysis of the data can be seen that there is a decrease the number of oropharyngeal bacteria of 140 ± 76.625 (p = 0.000). Conclusion: There is a decrease in the number of bacteria in the oropharynx significantly in the use of chlorhexidine. Keywords: chlorhexidine, a mechanical ventilator, the number of oropharyngeal bacteria, oral hygiene.
