  • Background: Pityriasis vesicolor is a superficial fungal infection caused by Malassezia furfur. Cinnamon essential oil is a traditional drug which has antifungal effect. This study is aimed to compare the effectiveness between cinnamon essential oil (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) 6,25% and ketoconazole 2% in vitro to the growth of Malassezia furfur in pityriasis versicolor. Methods: This was an experimental study using 30 patients of pityriasis versicolor as samples. The diagnosis of Malassezia furfur is based on the result of microscopic examination of skin scrapping from sample using KOH + Blue-Black Parker ink, inoculated on the olive oil Sabouraud Dekstrose Agar (370C for 2 -5 days). The colonies of Malassezia furfur were cultivated on the olive oil Sabouraud Dekstrose Agar supplemented media with 6,25% cinnamon essential oil and 2% ketoconazole incubated at 370C for 2-5 days. Data was obtained from observing the growth of Malassezia furfur colonies in both media. Result: Malassezia furfur were not found in all 30 medias of olive oil Sabouraud Dekstrose Agar which contained 6,25% cinnamon essential oil. From this study also there was no Malassezia furfur in 30 medias of olive oil Sabouraud Dekstrose Agar which contained 2% ketokonazol. The data wasn’t eligible for chisquare test so that Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used and the result was p=1.00 (not significant). Conclusion: There was no difference between the effectiveness of 6,25% cinnamon essential oil and 2% ketoconazole in inhibiting the growth of Malassezia furfur in pityriasis versicolor in vitro. Keywords: pityriasis versicolor, Malassezia furfur, cinnamon essential oil (Cinnamomum zeylanicum), ketoconazole.
