- Background Acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease are the main cause of acquired heart disease in children. However, in reality parents’ knowledge on children acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease is still low so it is necessary to find an instrument that can increase the parents’ knowledge on children acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease, in this research used counseling method. Aim To analyze the effect of counseling on children acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease to the increase in parents’ knowledge. Methods This research used quasi-experimental of one group pretest posttest design. The sample is taken by consecutive sampling. The sample was 36 parents who visited Pediatric Clinic of Panti Wilasa Dr. Cipto Hospital in Semarang in May to June 2012. Researcher gave questionnaires that have been tested for validity and reliability to the sample as a pretest. Once the pretest is done, researcher provided counseling on children acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease to the sample. Fifteen days after the counseling conducted, researcher gave posttest via telephone because of the difficulty to meet the respondents. Wilcoxon test is used for data analysis. Results Parents’ knowledge on children acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease is still low but parents’ knowledge on children acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease increased to 35,33 after counseling (p<0,001). The topics include the definition, etiology, prevention, treatment, transmission, complication and special treatment about children acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease. Conclusion Counseling can be used as an instrument to increase the parents’ knowledge on children acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease.
