  • Background: The frequency of β thalassemia carriers in Indonesia is quite large, approximately 3-5%, even in some areas may as high as 10%. Excess iron absorption and ineffective erythropoiesis increase the risk of iron overload in β thalassemia carriers, especially if they had excessive iron intake or iron supplementation. Serum ferritin, one of the markers of iron overload, is important to monitor the iron concentration in the body. Hepcidin, a hormone secreted by hepatocyte, circulated in plasma, and excreted through the urine, is involved in iron homeostasis in thalassemias. This research intended to explore the correlation of serum ferritin and hepcidin concentration in β thalassemia carriers. Methods: This was observational cross-sectional research using 26 consecutive sample of β thalassemia carriers who examined themselves in Clinical Pathology laboratory of dr.Kariadi Hospital or Indonesian Red Cross in Semarang. Serum ferritin concentration level was measured using VIDAS® Ferritin automatic quantitative examination with ELFA technique. Hepcidin level was measured using ELISA kit. The data analyzed using computer program with p <0,05 considered as significant. Results: Spearman correlation test between serum ferritin level and hepcidin level was r=0,252; p=0, 215. Conclusion: There is no correlation between serum ferritin level and hepcidin level in β thalassemia carriers. Keywords: β thalassemia carrier, serum ferritin, hepcidin, iron overload
