  • Background: The use of Oral antiseptic is one of pharmacology way to reduce Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP) incident by appraising Clinical Pulmonary Infection Score (CPIS) on patients using mechanical ventilator. Povidone iodine oral 1% is antiseptic that can eliminate microorganism and prevent germ collony growth in the mouth so that aspiration of secrections won’t occur inside respiratory tract. Methods: This research design was experimental pre and post test one group design. The sample consists of 16 patients treated in RSUP Dr. Kariadi ICU Semarang using mechanical ventilator that meets the inclution and exclution criteria. The xamination was Clinical Pulmonary Infection Score (CPIS) examination: temperature, blood gas analysis, tracheal secretion, blood routine and thorax X photo. The hypothesis test used paired t-test to compare the CPIS before and after the usage of povidone iodine oral 1%. Result: There was significant reduction in Clinical Pulmonary Infection Score (CPIS) (p=0,001) after using povidone iodine oral 1%. Conclusion: Povidone iodine oral 1% can reduce Clinical Pulmonary Infection Score (CPIS) on patients using mechanical ventilator. Keywords: povidone iodine oral 1%, Clinical Pulmonary Infection Score (CPIS), mechanical ventilator.
