- Background: Acne vulgaris is a skin disease which has always been a problem for adolescents and young adults. Women usually develop acne at their premenarcheal ages; earlier than men do. The peak incidence in women is found at the age of 14 – 17 years. Increased hormone prior to menstruation can affect the exacerbation and worsen the acne vulgaris. This study aims to analyze the association between menstruation with the incidence of acne vulgaris in adolescents. Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited 60 female high school students in Semarang who fulfilled the inclusion criteria (listed as a high school student in Semarang, aged between 14-18 years, suffering from acne vulgaris. Data were collected by using questionnaire and examination of acne vulgaris. Data were analyzed by using chi-square test, with significance level p <0.05. Results: Acne vulgaris most commonly started to develop at the time before menstruation (41.7%). Most subjects who suffer from acne vulgaris were 17 years old (53.3%), family history of acne vulgaris is less affected (41.7%) with a history of acne vulgaris is found most in the mother (64%), cosmetic used on subjects with acne vulgaris (86,7%), treatment of acne vulgaris is still low (23.3%) and most forms of medicine useds topical medications (93.3%), conduct regular facial cleaning (75%), stress factors influence on acne vulgaris (55%), food that most affect acne vulgaris is nuts (60%). There is a relationship between menstruation and the incidence of acne vulgaris in adolescents (p = 0.004). Conclusion: The Acne vulgaris is most commonly found at the time before menstruation (41.7%). There is a relationship between menstruation and the incidence of acne vulgaris in adolescents.
