- This research deals with attitude of society, espe¬cielly perception of people, towards the life of "sedekah laut", so that research method used is qualitative method. The description of data recording tchnique counts on : 1>, researcher quality as fiel worker in collecting rapport of interview; 2>, participant observation; and 3>, concerning to important use of book study. Meanwhile, data analysis bases on the application of stratification method which con¬cerns to : 1>, class of society (formal, informal and socie¬ty leader); 2>, group of society (old and young); a>, educa¬tional background (educated ang uneducated); 4>, gender (men and women). Perception s related to three basic elements, they are : 1>, knowledge and understanding to subyect related to ritual process of "sedekah laut"; 2>, awareness, sacrifice dactor and totality involvement as "sedekah laut" is going on; 3>, their calling in life factor companied by serious will towards the essence and rirual process of "sedekah la¬ut". Samples of recording data are based on three select¬ed villages, they are : Jobokuto, Bandengan and Bulu. Sixty samples of selected respondent are taken from each selected villages. Perception of people towards "sedekah laut" as follows : 1. formal public figures who have possitive perception are 90% and 80%; while who have negative perception are 10% and 20%; 2. comparison between possitive ang negative perception of educated and uneducated if normal public figure are 90%, 70%, and 10%, 30% to 70%, 50% and 30%, 50%; 3. comparison between possitive and negative perception of leader of people are 90%, 70%, and 10%, 30% to 80%, 40% and20%, 60%; 4. comparison between possitive and negative perception of educated and uneducated adults are 50%, 30% and 50%, 40% to 50%, 70% and 50%, 60%; 5. comparison between possitive and negative perception of educated and uneducated teenagers are 20%, 30% and 30%, 40% to 80%, 70% and 70%, 60%. The cause of degrading of involvement to ritual ce¬remony of "sedekah laut", especially among adults and teen¬agers, towards possitive percepyion are : 1. the ceremony of "sedekah laut" now has degrated to tradi tion only; 2. the ceremony of "sedekah laut" has been manipulated; 3. no efforts to herritage the story of "sedekah laut" from old generation to young generation; 4. it seems that there is no efforts form young generation to find out and comprehend the essence of "sedekah lent"; 5. unadequacy of coordinative, cooperative and persuasive work system between goverment and local fishermen; 6. entertainment and sport comparation dominate more the ac¬tivities; 7. ritual ceremony of "sedekah laut" is no longer centered one location; 8. the doer of "sedekah laut" have spread out.
