- ABSTRACT Background: Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr, is one of the traditional ingredients that believed has immunomodulator effect. Its tuber consists of chemical constituents that are able to increase secretion of nitric oxide (NO) by macrophages. The objective of this study is to prove the effect of Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr’s tuber, in secretion of NO by macrophages of BALB/c Mice infected with Salmonella typhimurium. Method: This was an experimental study using the post-test only control group design on BALB/c mice, consists of 24 male mice which were divided into 4 groups. K was the control group which only infected by S. typhimurium without treatment, and experiment groups (P1, P2, P3) were treated with Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr’s tuber extract with various doses (10 mg; 20 mg; 40 mg) for 14 days then infected with 103 Salmonella typhimurium on the 9th day. On 15th day, peritoneal macrophages were isolated to count the concentration of NO using modified Griess method. Results: There was significant difference in NO concentration between K-P3 (p=0.001), P1-P2 (p<0.001), P1-P3 (p<0.001) and P2-P3 (p<0.001). But there was no significant difference between K-P1 (p=0.291) and K-P2 (p=0.078) Conclusion: 40 mg Gynura Procumbens (Lour.) Merr per oral per day can increase secretion of NO by macrophage of BALB/c Mice Infected with Salmonella typhimurium. Keywords: Gynura procumbens (Lour.)
