- This study is mainly to analyze the efficiency manufacturing industry in Central Java. The secondary data of nine classifications of large and medium manufacturing industry in Central Java (ISIC 31 – ISIC 39) from 1995 to 2000. Were estimated by Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) methods. Shift-share analysis was also to be employed to analyze competitive advantage of the region . The results indicated that most of manufacturing industry in Central Java has been efficient. There are still two manufacturing industries that were inefficient. They are ISIC 33(manufacture of wood, bamboo, rattan including furniture) and ISIC 35 (manufacture of chemical, petroleum, coal, rubber and plastics product). ISIC 33 was inefficient on 1995 with 97,95 rIr efficiency score and ISIC 35 was inefficient on 1999 with 99,49 % efficiency score. Based on competitive advantage criteria, the result indicated that Central Java have competitive advantage on ISIC 31, ISIC 32, ISIC 33, ISIC 35, ISIC 39 and it have specialization on ISIC 33, ISIC 34, ISIC 35, ISIC 37, ISIC 38 ISIC 39.
