  • This study observed the speech styles in drug commercials. The styles were analyzed based on the social relationships that exist among the parties in conversation. The writer used the qualitative approach and the data were taken by recording from video recorder and cassette recorder. In analyzing the twenty five drug commercials, the basic theory that the writer used was Martin Joos' styles. Since the data were in the form of conversation, she also used Dell Hymes' Ethnography of Communication in order to provide the context of the utterances. As a study about speech styles ~ndonesian drug television commercials, this thesis was primarily concerned with Indonesian language and its grammar as well. From the study, it was found that there were four styles only in the commercials, namely formal, casual, consultative and intimate.
