- ABSTRACT Rahmat Syafa’at Ardiyan Pasaribu. The Effect And Groupwork And Individual Method On The Eight Grade Students’ Ability At Comprehending Reading Material At SMP Cerdas Murni Tembung. Keyword: Using Groupwork and Individual Method and The Students’ Ability Comprehending Reading Material. This research was intended to find out the empirical evidence of students’ ability at comprehending reading material by using groupwork and individual method of the eight grade students ability at comrehending reading material at SMP Cerdas Murni Tembung. The subject of this research were the class VIIIA and VIIIB of SMP Cerdas Murni Tembung. They were 80 students. The research data were taken from the subject and the English teacher. This research was quantitative research. The population of this research was all students’ class VIII SMP Cerdas Murni Tembung was 80 students. The sample of this research taken from 40 students’ experiment class and 40 students’ control class. The instrument for collecting data was a test. The data was analyzed by t-test formula with the data showed that mean experiment class were 75,5 and 65, control class were 65,5 and 54,5. The variant of groupwork were 276,67 and 174,24, the variant of individual were 271,65 and 169,26. The result of the analysis showed that tcount = 3,18 for groupwork and tcount = 3,37 for Individual Method were higher than t table = 1,986 with the level significant 0,05. From the result, the researcher found that there was significant of the students’ ability in reading were taught by groupwork and individual method. It meant alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and null hyphothesis (Ho) was rejected.
