  • Rice husk is one of the most abundant agricultural wastes in Indonesia which has not been optimally utilised. Direct burning of rice husks on sites have created air pollution and environmental problems. In fact, about 20% of rice husk contains amorphous silica which is quite reactive and have a great potential to be used as a raw material for silica based products. The aim of experiment is to study the effect of temperature during the pre-treatment process using acetic acid on the characteristics of the resulting silica. The characterisation of silica ashes included the analysis of composition and structure using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), X-ray Fluorescene (XRF). The specific surface area of silica was determined using Brunauer, Emmet, Teller-Surface Area Analyzer (BET-SAA). Silica produced from this experiment had an amorphous form. The highest silica purity with Si content of 93,4% was obtained from rice husk treated at room temperature. The highest specific surface area of the amorphous silica was derived from the leaching process of rice husks conducted at 75 C.
