- Bhayangkara Hospital in Surabaya is potential to generate hazardous solid waste. Therefore, it needs a good management system from the source to the disposal system in order to prevent the impact of pollution to the environment. The aims of this study are: to measure the amount of hazardous solid waste generation, to determine composition of hazardous solid waste, to evaluate hazardous solid waste management system, and to establish management strategies. The methods included sampling and composition techniques measurement of the hazardous solid waste according to National Standards SNI 19-3964-1995. Repetition of sampling was done 8 times. Analysis were carried out based on technical, institutional and legal aspects by SWOT analysis. The sources hazardous solid waste in Bhayangkara Hospital were polyclinic, laboratory, emergency, radiology, operating, ICU, and seven nurse units. The total hazardous solid waste generation rate was 6.46 kg / day. The main hazardous solid waste component was non sharp infectious waste (43.22%), which comprised cotton, gloves, used maskers etc. The other components were: pharmaceutical toxic waste (32.81%), sharp infectious waste (15.39%), and sharp metal infectious waste (8.57%). There were technical incompatibilities of the existing hazardous solid waste management to the national standard guidelines. The incompatibilities were: containment, collection, storage, processing, and destruction systems. The ideal condition of hazardous solid waste management should be based on the government standards. The proposed strategy was to apply hazardous solid waste management standards. Improvement of the hazardous solid waste should be consulted with the Health Agency of Surabaya City.
