English language teaching for the seventh grade students with hearing impairment (a descriptive study of methods and material approximately used at SLB “PRI” Buaran Pekalongan in the academic year of 2009/2010)

Teachers should have certain requirement and ability to deliver English in the classroom well and acceptable for the students. They need to apply good method and good learning strategy. It is also applies to students with hearing impairment which need good and special methods, such as oralism, cued speech, and American Sign Language in orther to teaching learning process effectively. The objectives of the study are to know the methods applied in the teaching learning process at SLB “PRI” Buaran Pekalongan and to know the material delivered to teaching English lesson in the seventh grade students with hearing impairment at SLB “PRI” Buaran Pekalongan. This research is descriptive study. It is conducted at SLB “PRI” Buaran Pekalongan. The subjects of this study were the students with hearing impairment at SMPLB “PRI” Buaran Pekalongan. The number of the subjects are five students. The techniques of data collection used by the writer are observation, interview, and documentation. Based on the data obtained, it is reported that teacher use some methods in teaching learning process. The method that used by teacher is American Sign Language (ASL) as a special method that used to students with hearing impairment. Teacher makes combination between ASL with general methods that are used in English language teaching such as Grammar Translaion Method (GTM), Total Physical Response (TPR) and also uses picture and other media that can be used to teach students with hearing impairment. The teacher uses the material based on SKKD which were appropriated to their conditions. The materials are given for students with hearing impairment more easy to be understood by them, such as introducing self, greeting, things in the classroom, and professions. Based on the result, the writer gives some suggestions, such as; the teacher should use the methods that it can improve student’s motivation in learning and using English as frequently as possible
