Daftar Isi:
- This study examines the flag used by Hizb ut-Tahrir Indonesia Yogyakarta (HTI DIY). There are two kinds of flags, liwa and rayah. Liwas ground is white and Rayahs color is black, both charged the profession of faith (shahada) in Arabic Calligraphy. Those flags are analyzed from a historical context, cultural context, and semiotic aesthetics. This qualitative research data obtained through observations, interviews, documentation studies, and literature review. In the historical context, liwa and rayah have been used by the Prophet Muhammad and the first four caliphs. Furthermore, different types of flags were popped up in the period of Umayyad until Ottoman Caliphate. After the collapse of the Caliphate, the Islamic organizations, including Hizb ut-Tahrir (HT), re-raise it. In cultural contex, liwa and rayah will be flags of a new Caliphate aspired by HT. HTI DIY confirms that both were not flags of HT but flags of Islam. However, almost all of its external activities exploit them. This indicates that the flags has become an important artifact for it. In semiotic aesthetics, as aesthetic object, the forms of liwa and rayah show varieties, but still in accordance with written references in its official book. Those flags contain aesthetic values, that is: symbolic values, which refer to Islam and the Caliphate
