  • Environmental damage in Indonesia has become a concern for many parties. Flood in rainy season and drought in the dry season show the phenomenon of the natural resource management that have caused the damage to the water cycle. The increased of the social economic and cultural activities of the society in the area of Sub-Watershed of Cicajur-Cipeujeuh causing the tendency of transferring function of the land from preserved function into agriculture and settlement. Sub-watershed of Cicajur-Cipeujeuh is located in the upper course of Cimanuk watershed, which is one of the Priority I of Cimanuk Watershed (SK Menhut No. 328 in 2009). This area is also one of the national priorities of disaster-prone area in order to halt environmental degradation. Therefore, it is necessary to reformulate the land use, so that it can function optimally in supporting the living. This study aims to evaluate and formulate the optimal land use based on the level of erosion and the land capability. This research conducted using the approach of land units as the analysis units. To determine the actual rate of erosion, it uses the equation of Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE). Evaluation of the land capability carried out by methods of matching based on the restricting factors. The evaluation of the appropriateness of the land use is done by comparing the actual land use with the classification of land capability. The results show that the actual rate of erosion in the Sub-watershed of Cicajur-Cipeujeuh is very high i.e. of 2,635,838.10 tons/yr or on average 388.77 tons/ha/yr. This area consists of the land capability level III, IV, V, VI, VII and VIII, with the main limiting factor namely the level of erosion and the surface slopes. The current land use is mostly inappropriate negatively with the level of land capability of 5,298.41 ha (78.15%), which is the cause of the land degradation and the high rate of erosion. Through consideration of aspects of erosion, the ability of land and population force, the optimal land use in these areas should be dominated by land use patterns that are more productive and conservative i.e. as preserved forest area of 1,012.47 ha (14.93%) and plantations of 3,532.71 ha (52.11%). To control the rate of erosion up to the allowed level of erosion, then the change of land use should be accompanied by the measures of soil conservation techniques.
