  • Aluminium alloys can not be separated from a variety of defects that occur during the casting such as porosity, shrinkage, hot tearing, small holes, misrun and blister. The defects occur in foundry products are usually caused by poor mixing, improper casting, which is too rapid freezing and mold design ineffective. The study was conducted to determine the likelihood of hot tearing in Al-Si castings using a mold form CRCM horizontal type. CRCM mold vertical type is a modification of the shape of the mold testing of hot tearing CRC (constrained rod casting) that has been done by previous researchers. Modifications were made aiming to obtain the data necessary to analyze the influence of pouring temperature and silicon content of this defect. Effect of silicon content and pouring temperature on hot tearing during permanent mold casting were investigated using Constrained Rod Casting Modified (CRCM) in steel mold. The alloys included Al-0.24%Si, Al-1.19%Si, Al-1.66%Si and Al-2.5%Si. Pouring temperature were used in this research is 710 OC, 760 OC and 810 OC. The hot tearing sensitivity (HTS) was determined based on the hot tear severity rating (Ci) and length of the rod (Li) where the hot tear occurs. At the same pouring temperature, the HTS was significantly lower at 2.6%Si. Increasing pouring temperature decreases hot tearing in Al-2.6% Si alloy, but the effect is not significantly for another alloys. Length of the rod affects the type of cracks are formed and the resulting value of the HTS. HTS maximum value occurs in a long rod. Rod number 4, rod number 5 and 6 are composed of bars cracks kind of moderate to complete and has a number of crack 73.9% of the total number of cracks of cast products.
