- Background: Misoprostol is widely used to induce labor. Different ways of administration provides difference result and side effects. Sublingual administration gives misoprostol acid peak blood levels faster than the other way, but gradually decrease after 2 hours and it is minimally detected after 4 hours. Objective: To compare efficacy and safety of misoprostol 25 Î1⁄4g given sublingually at intervals of 4 and 6 hours for the induction of labor. Design: Non-blind randomized controlled trial. Material and method: The study was conducted in three hospitals (Sardjito hospital Yogyakarta, Muntilan hospital, Banjarnegara hospital), and Mergangsan health center Yogyakarta from March to December 2010. Subjects were pregnant women with an indication of induction of labor who meet inclusion and exclusion criteria. Randomization is done by a computer generated random number. The treated group received 25 Î1⁄4g sublingual misoprostol at 4 hours intervals and control group at 6 hours intervals. The results of the study is the success of induction, duration in arriving to second stage since the last drug administration, and side effects. Chi square and t-test was used for statistical analysis. Results: 150 subjects consisted of 75 treated and 75 control met the study criteria. The success rate was 78.7% in the treated group vs. 72% in the controlled group (RR 1.09
