- Background: The development of information technology has altered the conventional type of hospital laboratory services which is mostly paper based into komputerized system. Interm of quicker and easier, komputer based data and information management is also more accurate. Laboratory services in the regional general hospital Praya which was using paper-based data collection, leading to problems of accessibility, usability, clarity and completeness of the information. Thus a komputer-based laboratory information system was build to improve information management particularly for the easiness of accessibility, ensuring fast, clear and complete laboratory information as well as improving information usage for decision making. Objective: This study aims to develop appropriate information systems for supporting laboratory services in hospital toward in depth and systematic assessment amongst relevant stakeholders. Methods: The study was conducted at Praya Public Hospital at Central District of Lombok, Nusa Tenggara Barat. Stages of action research were used for this study. Data and information obtained toward observations, indepth interviews and questionnaire. Observation conducted at laboratory department by studying business process of laboratory services, understanding the paper forms which are used and identifying availability of information technology infrastructures. Interview was conducted to 14 respondents to obtain system specification of the prototype. The prototype then tested and implemented for period of a month. Questionnaires were distributed to above respondents to gain user perception on the usage of laboratory system. Result: A prototype of komputer based of laboratory information system developed according to the users� need. Five stages of prototyping method was used namely planning, design, systems testing, pilot implementation and system evaluation. During the planning phase, there were four group of information identified, information which is required by hospital management, information that required by the laboratory technician, information required by the physicians and other health providers as well as information required by the patient. Following the need assessment, a context diagram, structure of database, Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD), input and output forms were created. A month of system trial showed that the application can provide data and information needed by all group of users. Evaluation on user�s perception demonstrated that the system could provide information easily, understandable, complete and useful. Conclusion: Developing information system that involved potential users in hospital laboratory unit demonstrated its usefulness and need to be further implemented.
