  • This research aims to determine the effect of the use of cow and horse manure as a substrate in the formation of methane and the fermentation process that includes methanogenik enzyme activity and substrate content of volatile fatty acids (VFA).The experiment was conducted with two treatments, namely P1 for the treatment of biogas with cow dung and P2 for treatment using horse manure each with addition of three levels of teak leaf litter which were 0%, 5% and 10%. Each treatment had three replications with sampling at 4 points on the day 10th, 20th, 30th and 40th. Variables being measured were pH, temperature, volume of biogas, enzyme activity, content of volatile acids and methane production. This research used data processing calculation of split-plot analysis for the observation on the measurement of pH, temperature, volume of bio-gas, enzyme activity and levels of methane gas. The results showed temperature differences biogas produced using cow and horse feces. Optimization of the volume, content and production of biogas methane accured from horse feces without the addition of teak leaf litter, this was caused by BK and the ratio C/N horse feces which were higher than cow feces. A significant decrease was fomed in biogas from horse feces supplemented with 10% leaf teak, this was caused by tannin content on teak leaves. In the biogas from cow feces, tannin did not provide a noticeable effect, because the cow feces had a higher sensitivity to tannin.
