  • Diabetes mellitus is a chronic illness that can be found in people with various age groups including adolescence. It is incurable and has to be managed throughout the patientâ��s life. The psychosocial aspects that need to be investigated in the study are illness representation and peer support. This study was aimed at exploring self-management experience in adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus in its psychosocial aspects and explaining the role of illness representation and peer support in self-management in adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus. This study involved four adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus whose ages ranged from 11 to 20, their parents, peers, physicians and teachers. The study employed indigenous psychological approach using indigenization from without strategy and qualitative approach using phenomenological interpretative analysis which were conducted in complementary manner. The data were collected by using in-depth interview technique. Results show that center of management is the mother, positive and negative emotion was associated with the external control management by the mothers. It was also found that all study participants were not able to accept the illness as it is, and having relatively limited knowledge on the illness. Local belief that diebetes was perceived as something bad, which is inheritedly given by the family.
