  • An ultrasonic tomography system non-destructive test, evaluation and inspection has been designed and constructed. The system was developed based on the ASTM C 597-02 model. An ultrasonic wave has been used as a probe in this system wich has various the physical quantity. By measuring the time-of- flight of the ultrasonic pulse across the object in translation and rotation scanning mode, the speed of the ultrasonic wave in the object material can be mapped. The trigger pulse was generated using an ATmega8535 microcontroller then amplified using IRF840 MOSFET whereas the ultrasonic receiver consists of an Op-amp and a comparator. The tomography data were collected by translating object in 127 steps at 200 angles of projection. This data then fed in the computer in a serial communication mode using UART protocol. The filtered backprojection method has been employed to reconstructed the cross-sectional image of the object. The ultrasonic tomography system was tested using a cylindrical test object made of concrete material with six hole filled by material by various density. The result shows that the system works properly. A spatial resolution of (0.29 ± 0.03) cm and a gray level image resolution of 0,072 scale/(m/second) has been achieved. The reconstructed image time-of-flight has error value 4% compared with the value yield from the measurement using standard ASTM C597-02 method.
