- Daun dewa (Gynura pseudochinensis Merr.) consumed by people as traditional medicine or as vegetable. Daun dewa contain bioactive substance caused embrionic malformation. The aims of this research are to know the effects of daun dewa leaf methanol extract on mice (Mus musculus L.) embryo development and to know the malformation in mouse foetuses. Two groups of control and three groups of treatment were used with five replication each group. Control groups were not administered with daun dewa leaf methanol extract. Treatment groups consist of animals that administered with daun dewa leaf methanol extract dose 7,5 mg/ 25 g bw, 15 mg/ 25 g bw, and 30 mg/ 25 g bw on 6 days to 15 days of pregnancy. Liver and kidney microanatomy were preparated with paraffin methods and Hematoxylin-Eosin staining. Skeleton preparation were done with Alcian Blue Alizarin Red S staining methods. Detection of bioactive substance in daun dewa leaf methanol extract with Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC). The amount of live, death and resorbtion foetuses, the structure of liver, kidney, skeleton and the morphometry of foetuses were analyzed with ANOVA in 5 % level significant. The result showed that mouse liver cell and kidney cell structures of control groups were normal, but those in the treatment groups were damaged. Malformation and development inhibition were not occured in skeleton. Thin Layer Chromatography showed that daun dewa leaf methanol extract contain bioactive subtances, however, in the foetus homogenate were no bioactive subtances. The conclusion of this research are daun dewa leaf methanol extract caused damage of liver and kidney microanatomy of mouse foetus, but no effects on skeleton development.
