AgroNo.l Bulaksumur Yogyakarta Email: risuhadi@yahoo.com ABSTRACT Total biomass were determined in cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz), maize (Zea mays L.), rice (Oryza sativa L.), groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) and soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr) which were grown under alley cropping system in a moderately site quality of planted teak (Tectona grandis Linn.f) forest in Madiun Forest District. To estimate total biomass of food crops which grown between a planted teak hedgerows under alley cropping system, ten quadrats of 1x10 m and lxl m, five quadrats of 2x2 m and ten quadrats of plots of lxl m were randomly placed in the planted areas of cassava and rice, maize and soybean and groundnut, respectively. Harvesting method was used in the research, that was all of the food crops in the plots were harvested, devided into each components, weighed in fresh weight and took a sample to the biomass. The research showed that the total biomass of food crops were 32.05±2.16 ton ha-1, 12.24±0.79 ton ha-1, 7.53±0.89 ton ha-1, 8.54±0.61 ton ha-1, and 5.76±0.40 ton ha-1 in the cassava, maize, rice, groundnut and soybean, respectively. Measuring of total biomass of the food crops which grown under alley cropping system in a forest was useful to understand the biomass distribution of common used value components and other components as value-added, carbon storage of vegetation in short rotation, and role of forest in food security and energy source as ones of priority programs of the state.
