-
A highly porous metal-organic framework material (MOF-199) was synthesized by solvothermal method from the reaction of copper nitrate trihydrate and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid. The MOF-199 was characterized using several techniques including XRD, SEM, TEM, TGA, FT-IR and nitrogen physisorption measurements. Highly crystalline porous MOF-199 was achieved in a yield of 76%, with Langmuir surface areas of more than 2000 m2/g. The MOF-199 could be effectively used as a solid acid catalyst for the Knoevenagel reaction of benzaldehyde with malononitrile under mild conditions. It was also observed that no contribution from homogeneous catalysis of active acid species leaching into reaction solution was detected, indicating evidence for a real heterogeneous catalysis.
