- <p>At present a serious shortage of timber has become evident in Indonesia. The gap between timber<br /> supply and demand may be considered as one of the causes of uncontrolled illegal cuttings. This situation<br /> seems to become more serious in the coming decades due to the fact that the demand will steadily increase<br /> in one side, whereas in the other side the area of natural production forests as the main source of timber<br /> has been dwindled, and the future timber production capacities of logged over forest and the existing<br /> forest plantations are still in big question to meet the increasing demand for timber. Meanwhile, there is<br /> strong pressure for the implementation of sustainable production forest management and for greater<br /> involvement ofloca1 people in the utilization of nearby forest areas. To anticipate the predictable increase<br /> of timber shortage in the coming decades and to overcome the pressure mentioned above, this paper<br /> describes the way out to be taken through the improvement of government's policy on the management<br /> of natural production forests.<br /> Establishment of plantation forests of Dipterocarps species, particularly of some Shorea species<br /> which may produce ca. 477 m3 per hectare during a 35 year rotation, is considered as the right way to be<br /> taken. An allocation of ca. 9 million hectares out of ca. 64.3 million hectares ofnatura1 production forest<br /> area for the establishment of well managed plantation forests may result in: (I) termination of shortage of<br /> timber beginning at the end of coming second decade, (2) more effective effort to safeguard the sustainability<br /> of the rest (ca. 54 million hectares) natural production forests as well as the implementation ofsustainable<br /> production forests management and (3) involvement opportunity to local people in plantation<br /> forests management or in agoforestry development on accessible plantation areas.</p>
