  • Background: Epidemiologic survey has estimated that the frequency of premenstrual syndrome or PMS is relatively high which is around 80-90%, and around 5% of women experience severe symptoms which disturb their daily activities. Objective: To find out the relationship between dating violence and premenstrual syndrome among adolescents. Method: This was a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach. The subjects were female students of SMAN 3 and SMK Penabur in Purworejo District as many as 141 students. Sample taking used a method of three stage sampling combined with purposive sampling and simple random sampling. Result: The prevalence of PMS among adolescent girls in Purworejo District was 45.5%. The symptoms which were frequently perceived by the adolescents were abdominal cramping, depression, and aches and pain in the joints. There was a significant relationship between dating violence and PMS. PMS was two times greater found in adolescents that experienced severe dating violence than those that experienced mild violence. Stressful events, knowledge about PMS and menstrual duration were significantly related to PMS both practically and statistically. In addition, there was a consistently significant relationship between severe dating violence (OR=3.6 and 95%CI=1.29-10.05) and PMS after involving variables of stressful events (OR=2.2 and 95%CI=1.07-4.64) and menstrual duration (OR=2.1 and 95%CI=1.03-4.43). Conclusion: The prevalence of PMS was greater in adolescent girls that received severe dating violence than those that received mild violence.
