  • This study examines classifier in Indonesian language. Classifier is the word that occurs after the numeral word and along with that forming one phrase called a numeral phrase, which may be placed before the noun. For example the word orang, ekor, buah in the phrases: dua orang petani, tiga ekor kelinci, dua belas buah rumah. The purpose of this study is to describe the forms of classifier in Indonesian language, to classify, and to describe syntactic characteristics the classifier. This research used descriptive method with three stages, namely data providing stage, data analysis stage, and data analysis presentation stage. Data providing stage was conducted by observing the language used in a free conversation technique and advanced technique â the data recording technique. Data analysis was conducted after the collected data had been classified. The analysis applied was distributional method by using the immediate constituent as the basic technique. Advanced technique used were deletion technique, substitution technique, expansion technique, insertion technique, and permutation technique. The presentation of data analysis was presented in the form of in-depth description because this research is a qualitative study. The result of this research was the form of classifier in Indonesian language, including the basic form, affix form (classifier with the suffix âan and classifier with confix per-/-an, and compound form. The classifier could be classified into three: (1) classifier for humans, (2) classifier for animals, and (3) classifier for inanimate objects. Each is further divided into common classifier and special classifier. The syntactic characteristics of the classifier includes position, the nature of the presence, and the closeness level in the numeral phrase. The positions of the classifier in Indonesian language are mostly placed at the right side of the noun. The nature of the classifier presence in a numeral phrase is optional (arbitrary) and some may be obligatory (mandatory). While the closeness level among classifier, numeral, and nominal is very low because those three constituents could be inserted by a word or a phrase. When inserted, it would not change the grammatical phrase, but it would change the meaning of the phrase.
