  • Background: Performance is the results which one achieves after accomplishing the work that consists of knowledge, experience and personality. This study aims to determine the factors affecting the performance of dental nurses majoring in dental health who graduated from the health polytechnic of the Ministry of Health in Padang based on competency at the community health centers in West Sumatra. Research methods: This study is a survey research with a cross-sectional approach, research subjects total sampling 35 dental nurses. Measuring instruments used were questionnaires and structured questions, indepndent variables are: Knowledge of dental nurses (cumulative grade point), interest in dental nursing profession, cooperation, motivation, and attitudes toward dental care profession. Dependent variable is the performance of dental nurses based on competencies. Analysis of test data using correlation and regression. Research Results: The results showed that the majority (60.0%) dental nurses have the performance in the medium category. Results of multiple regression analysis found that independent variables: dental nurse's knowledge, motivation, and attitudes toward professional dental nurses, significantly associated with the performance of dental nurses (p <0.05), while the variable of interest in dental nursing profession and cooperation not showed a significant effect (p> 0.05). Variable knowledge of dental nurses, work motivation and attitudes towards dental care professions contributed 64.3% (R2 = 0.643) on the performance of dental nurses. Knowledge of dental nurse to give the largest contribution to that is: for 24 % (Partial Eta Square = .240) on the performance of dental nurses. Conclusions: 1) The higher the knowledge of dental nurses, work motivation, and attitudes toward dental care professions, the higher performance of dental nurses. 2) The interest in dental nursing profession and the cooperation was not significant influence to the performance of dental nurses. 3) Variable knowledge of dental nurses had the greatest contribution to the performance of dentalnurses.
