  • Srimpi Renggawati in the palace of Yogyakarta stated as the creation of Sultan Hamengku Buwana V (1823-1855) then simplified by Sultan Hamengku Buwana VIII (1921-1939). In the era Sultan Hamengku Buwana VIII, srimpi Renggawati included as one of the sacred dance rituals are staged statehood on certain days and for certain purposes in the presence of important people and honorable, so the dance is presented in a magnificent, beautiful, and full order. However, behind the beauty and spendor of his appearance, especially in costume that is fashion greatness palace, allegedly stuck a variety of matters related to social conditions at that time the government palace. The purpose of this study was to determine the function, form, and the symbolic meaning of dance costume of srimpi Renggawati in the era Sultan Hamengku Buwana VIII in the context of ritual in Yogyakarta palace. This study is a qualitative research with a multidisciplinary approach that focusses on the historical approach. Methods of data collection is the literature study (library research), method of observation, interviews, documentative methods, as well as audio-visual library. Based on the analysis of their functions is known that srimpi Renggawatiâ��s costume in the context of rituals in the palace of Yogyakarta has several functions that can be classified into two categories, namely physical functioning or technological functions and communication functions. Physical function associated with the form and usefulness, both for dancers and for dance. While the function of communication, dance costume is thought to function as a medium for expression of creator to deliver a variety of personal and social needs. Various spiritual meaning of symbols on costume including accessories and make up on the dancers, as well as a form of moral intruction for the wearer is also closely linked to the function and sacred dance in those days.
