  • Ground water used by society does largely still not meet the requirements due to iron and manganese content exceeding the maximum limit of content based on the Regulation of the Ministry of Health, the Republic of Indonesia Number 416/ Menkes/Per/IX/1990 on the Requirements and Inspection of Water Quality. The maximum limit of iron content in fresh water is 1 mg/L, while the maximum limit of manganese content in fresh water is 0.5 mg/L. The objective of this research is to find out effectiveness of types of filter media, flowrate, and retention time on the reduction of iron and manganese content in ground water. Water samples that used in this research were ground water from Wonodri Village, Semarang without any treatment and instrument that used was filter column made from PVC pipe of 8 inch in diameter. The sampling of filtrate used a logarithmic interval. To find out the effectiveness of types of filter media, the research was conducted in batch by using filter media consist of coconut shell- charcoal and silica sand. Meanwhile, to find out the effect of flowrate on water quality, the research was conducted by using a continuous flow system with variation in flowrate of 1 litre/minute, 2 litre/minute, and 3 litre/minute. The result of the batch experiment indicates that the filter media of coconut shell-based charcoal could reduce the iron content of 95.02% and manganese one of 93.17%. Moreover, the filter media of silica sand could reduce the iron content of 72.62% and the manganese one of 58.18%. The percentages of iron content in the continuous flow system with variation in flowrate (Q) were: the discharges of 1, 2 and 3 litters/minutes were 90.69%, 79.78%, and 71.46%, respectively. Mean-while, the reduction of manganese content in the continuous flow system for the discharges of 1, 2, and 3 litters/minutes were as follows: 88.50%, 69.69%, and 55.91%, respectively. Based on result of the research, it can be concluded that the coconut shell charcoal was more effective for the use of reducing both iron and manganese contents in ground water, and the smaller and longer the retention time the water in the filter media, the better the absorption process.
