- This research was aimed at describing the history of batik industry in Kota Jambi from 1980 to 2001, its influence on the economy of the population and its contribution to the economy of the city. The research employed historical method which consists of the heuristic step, source criticism, interpretation and historiography. Historical sources used were in the forms of official documents or reports, books, articles, magazine and bulletins conducted through library research and interviews. It applied processual approach to describe the growth and development of the batik industry in Kota Jambi from a household industry which was mainly considered as a side job (additional job) to a market-oriented or commercial small industry, regional approach to figure out the production and marketing areas of Jambi batik, economic approach to refer to the discussion of behavior oriented to observe the established connection or relationship between the involved parties, namely between the employer as the owner of the workshop or batik shop and the government, and employer and their workers. The research results show thaht batik industrialization in Kots Jambi fluctuates due to the different interest between craftsmen and local government. Craftsmen take advantage of the batik industry for the economic interests while the local government for political one. It can be concluded that the history of the batik industry in Jambi is influenced by government policy, macro-economic conditions, and inisiative of the craftsmen.
