- The development of transport systems affect spatial accessibility that plays an important role in urban activity growth nodes. The development Puruk Cahu City influenced by 2 (two) main factors namely the dynamics of population and transport activities throught the river that plays an important role in the early period of its growth. The purpose of the study is to describe the spatial growth of the Puruk Cahu City since 2003 to 2009, which is divided into several periods and to identify the effect of changes in the transportation system on the spatial growth of the city. The research was carried out by deductive method. The location of the study is part of an urban area that includes the functional areas of the Puruk Cahu City, consisting of 2 (two) villages and 1 (one) small village. The analysis technique used is to conduct exploration, sorted by time (time series) are mapped to obtain spatial data. Mapping was done to provides a picture trends through the visual display thematic maps are available for each spot of time (period) provided. Puruk Cahu City was establisshed from a place where there is barter among residents in the hinterland and the traders who arrive by boat. The spatial growth of the City Puruk Cahu was due to main function is the primary and secondary functions. Transportation system that affect the spatial growth of cities influenced by the presence of river transport dock, the development of road networks, bridges and infrastructure development of city transport services. The spatial patern of the Puruk Cahu City is characterized by linear and sprawling patern. The estabilish meat of Merdeka Bridge force spatial growth of the city to the west, then regional accessibility cause change in the use of transportation to surrounding towns by using land transportation. Such growth formed a linear concentric pattern. The government should considered this spatial growth and guide city development in a more balanced way.
