- The high interest of the community to live in the city makes the selection of land for residential neglected, disaster-prone areas also remain in demand as long as it was in the city. Development in areas prone to disaster, should be given special handling, so as not to endanger people who live in the region. One use of area along the river banks have steep sloping topography at risk of landslides and floods, not only for residential but also for activities in various aspects of community life. The tendency to exploit nature without taking into account the environmental deterioration unconsciously threaten human survival in the future. This paper discusses the waterfront open space Winongo banks of the river is located in the city of Yogyakarta as a case study, with the aim to discover patterns and character of the waterfront open space in order to obtain the design direction and strategy of consolidation is right for the improvement and development of the area. Factors that influence the land use, building layout, circulation patterns, open space, and local community activities, along with vulnerable areas and potential. This study used the method of rationalistic methods - using the deductive theory of Christopher Alexander's pattern language (pattern language) as a reference which is then compared with the original conditions of research objects. Based on observation and analysis of results obtained in the form of regional patterns can be created so that the design direction and strategy of consolidation.
