- The dissertation entitled The Meaning of Knowledge in the Philosophy of Minangkabau Customs and its Relevance with the Communal Forum contains some discussions on epistemological issues in the philosophy of Minangkabau customs through the search within its local wisdom encountered in its expressions pepatah petitih in Minangkabau customs. This research is important in order that the epistemological concepts articulated within pepatah petitih will not be considered as merely verbal, rhetorical or nostalgic expressions of the past and as having lost its relevance to the present and future. This research aims at formulating the characteristics and the meanings of epistemological knowledge in the philosophy of Minangkabau customs. In order that the philosophical study can be realistic and be able to answer the existing realities, so the relevance will be reviewed from the contexts and practices of the communal discussions within Minangkabau customs. This is a library-based research which was meant to be philosophical and qualitative. The primary sources of this research was the philosophy of Minangkabau customs which was articulated within Minangkabau customs pepatah petitih. The study used Minangkabau pepatah petitih as its material object and epistemology as its formal objects. This research used historical methods, language analysis, hermeneutics, comparative studies and idealizations. The research has shown that first, Minangkabau local philosophy has based itself to the religious and natural provisions. The epistemology in Minangkabau local philosophy tends to be perceived as a form of understanding which has been based on the natural phenomena as the sources of ideas and inspirations. However, the cosmo-centric perceptions to the philosophy nature is the teacher or alam takambang jadi guru, is not an objective knowledge about the nature itself (knowledge of nature), rather, it has been used as an analog to create the value and behavior systems in the contexts of Minangkabau social life. Second, Minangkabau customs philosophy does not perceive knowledge as the synthesis of both empirical and rational aspects only and it did not base itself on merely observable and rational aspects (pareso or evaluation), but also as psychological (raso/emotions) so that it becomes ethical-argumentative concepts. It is raso pareso which has been used for the reference in the philosophy of Minangkabau customs. Third, the relevance of Minangkabau philosophical epistemology customs with its communal forum practices lie in the dialog processes performed by Minangkabau society when solving problems through discussions. The forums are considered successful if it can attain some consensus or agreements and can provide some spaces for disagreements to its participants. Two parallelisms found in Minangkabau customs managed to give opportunities to its adherents to communicate and to solve problems through discussions.
