  • Background. Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) can lead to high morbidity and mortality if not treated properly and promptly. Many studies were found not similar result, still pro and contra that obese children with DHF are predicted to develop more severe DHF infection (DSS) than non-obese children. Objective. To determine association between obesity with DSS. Methods. This case control study was conducted on DHF and DSS patients admitted to the pediatric department, Medical School, University of Gadjah Mada, Dr. Sardjito General Hospital Yogyakarta, from June 2008 until fulfill of the sample size (342 subjects). The subjects were patients aged less than 18 years who fulfilled WHO criteria for DHF (1997). The exclusion criteria were diagnosed dengue fever or other viral infection and incomplete data. The risk factors for DSS were analyzed using Chi-square test, calculation of odds ratio, and logistic regression analysis with a level of significance of <0.05. Results.
