  • Mouthwash is used as a plaque cleaner in addition to brush your teeth. Many patients have composite resin restorations on their teeth. Resin composites have an organic matrix, such as Bis-GMA, TEGDMA and UDMA. The aim of this study were to determine the differences of alcohol and non-alcohol containing mouthwash on surface roughness of composite resin restorations with Bis- GMA+TEGDMA and UDMA monomers. This study used 20 specimens of resin composite. A number of 10 specimens with the monomer Bis-GMA + TEGDMA were divided into 2 groups (groups a and b) and 10 specimens with UDMA monomer were divided into 2 groups (groups c and d). These specimens were selected randomly by the number of 5 samples in each group. Group a and c were soaked in 75 ml of mouthwash containing alcohol and group b and d were soaked in 75 ml of non-alcohol containing mouthwash for 6 hours. Measurement of surface roughness of composite resin in each sample was performed twice using a stylus profilometer with the shear direction mutually perpendicular slices and the results were averaged as the data. The results of this study indicate that surface roughness of composite resin with monomer Bis-GMA+TEGDMA and UDMA soaked in alcohol containing mouthwash is higher than in non-alcohol containing mouthwash. The results of statistical calculations using two-way ANOVA indicated no significant differences in average roughness (p> 0.05).
