  • This thesis discusses apology strategies in English by native speaker and non-native speaker (Javanese). This descriptive study is presented within the framework of Pragmatics based on the forms of strategies due to the coding manual as found in CCSARP. The goals of this study are to describe the apology strategies in English by native speaker and Javanese speaker in expressing apology and then to compare both based on the similarities and the differences and also to know the influence of culture that can be seen through the choice of strategies. The data were collected through the use of questionnaire in the form of Discourse Completion Test which was distributed to 30 native speakers and 30 Javanese speakers. Data are classified based on the degree of familiarity and the social distance between speaker and hearer and then the data of native and non native will be separated and classified in accordance with the type of strategies in coding manual. The results of this study are: the pattern of apology strategies of Javanese speaker are: alerters, IFID, taking on responsibility, explanation, offer of repair and concern for the hearer with IFID domination in the utterances, while the pattern of apology strategies by native speaker are: alerters, IFID, offer of repair, taking on responsibility, explanation and downgrading with less number of percentage than Javanese speaker. Apologies in English by native speaker and Javanese speaker, as the study has shown, have the similarities as well as differences. The similarities are the use of top three strategies, they are IFID, taking on responsibility and offer of repair although different in number of percentage
