  • Modification of bentonite by N-cetyl-N,N,N-trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) for adsorption of permanganate and chromate anions has been studied. The research was started by washing bentonite of Thailand using 1.5 M sulfuric acid followed by modification using CTAB surfactant with concentration as much as twice of the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of bentonite to change the bentonite charge. The surfactant modified bentonite (bentonite-CTAB) was then used for adsorption of permanganate and chromate anions from solution. The bentonite sampels were characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods, whereas the adsorbed anions were measured by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Results showed that the adsorption of permanganate and chromate anions on bentonite-CTAB followed the Langmuir isotherm adsorption. The adsorption capacity of bentonite-CTAB for permanganate anion was higher than that for chromate anion with the value of 0.78 and 0.36 mmol g-1 for permanganate and chromate anions, respectively.
