- This study entitled Cohesion and Coherence in Al-Kahf. The discussion text in this research is the written text of one of the letters in Qur'an, Al-Kahf. The study aims to prove the cohesion and coherence exists in the text, namely the congeniality relation of grammatical and lexical aspect, and the congeniality relation of meaning aspects. This study uses descriptive qualitative approach. the data collecting technique is literature techniques which uses written texts to obtain data. The Linguistic data are taken from 110 verses of Al-Kahf. The Data collection is limited to the purposes of the study. The findings show that referential relations in grammatical cohesion are achieved through pronouns and demonstrative pronoun. The relations of substitution are achieved through the elements of substitutive pronouns, demonstrative pronouns, and relative pronouns. The relations of ellipsis are achieved through the ellipsis of nouns, nominal phrases, verbs, and clauses. The relations of correlation are achieved through the usage of conjunctions /wa/, adversative conjunctions /bal / and /Lakin/, causal conjunctions /fa/, and temporal conjunctions /Lamma>/ and /iz/. The lexical cohesion is achieved through reiteration of five types: repetition, synonymy, antonymy, hiponimy, and metonymy. Based on the relation of meaning, signed coherence could be divided into eleven meaning relations, namely: additive, alternative, order, contrast, emphasis, causal, tempo, conditions, exclusions, conclusions, and similarity. Through the analysis, it may be concluded that there is an extremely close relation between cohesion and coherence. The aspects of form and meaning are interconnected among each other to form a coherent text. But coherence, occasionally, is maintained despite of no manifestation of cohesion since in textual understanding is not only based on the embodiment of cohesion explicitly but also requires an understanding of the context.
