Daftar Isi:
- This thesis mainly aims at finding the opportunity of resistance from the othered position on novel Puragabaya written by Saini K.M. Therefore, this thesis first seeks to find and explain how the position of panakawan is othered in that novel, then analyzes ambivalence of the relation between the two, and explains the form of resistance conducted by panakawan. The method used to read the data on the novel is discourse analysis, especially the one modeled by Sara Mills. Afterward those data are analyzed by using postcolonial theory, especially of Homi K. Bhabhas ideas on mimicry and hibridity. The result of the analysis shows that there is a position which is othered on the relation of panakawan and bangsawan on novel Puragabaya. In this case panakawan is othered through their naming, body, nature and habit, place, and social role. Referring to the ideal picture of bangsawan, it is clear that the othered picture of panakawan is portrayed as something given, normal or natural. However, the analysis on relation of the two especially through their mechanism of addressing, expressing suggestion, and education start to show ambivalence. Their relation seems as symmetrical relation, or the asymmetrical position in their relation is not something diametrical. Finally, resistance is shown through the ambivalence on the relation of the two. In fact, the two panakawan studied in this thesis, Ogel and Jasik, show resistance through different practice. Ogel practices resistance through mimicry, while Jasik practices it through anti-mimicry. In this case the ambivalence of antimimicry Jasik is shown in hibridity.
