  • This article is an attempt to explore social history of the Chinese community at Kampung Balong Surakarta in the social interaction with Javanese in the second half of twentieth century. This article is based on that the history of lower-class Chinese community is generally entrapped in two things: generalization of majority Chinese or forgotten in the history. The problem of research is that there is a series of natural processes to become Javanese proceeding among the Chinese, and there is always harmony relationship between those two ethnics along the history. In order to obtain a description of such problems, a critical history approach as well as the uses of primary and secondary source such as archive, in-depth interview, direct observation, and relevant reference is required. The result obtained from this research shows that the role of Chinese in the social life of Surakarta had occurred long before Surakarta became the capital of kingdom. The European group entry created the partition within the Chinese-Javanese relationship so that this relationship fluctuated. Another effect of the existence of European in Surakarta is the presence of modernization making Surakarta, in addition as the administrative city, as the industrial city. The involvement of Chinese in industry and trading makes this community increases in number so that the new settlement, one of which is Balong, is required. The people economic activity in Balong is primarily as the industrial labor, daily needs merchant, and batik industry, it is different from the colonial time that also undertook mindering and tax collector. The communityâs social life along the twentieth century had encountered many changes particularly in the customary ritual, name, religion, art, marriage, death, and mentality. This change is caused by the mixed marriage with the Javanese, and acceptance of the assimilation policy during New Order. This series of changes show the process transformation Chinese âbecoming Javaneseâ.
