  • This research, titled Classifier in Mandarin, aims to describe classifier in Mandarin from the aspects of the classification, distribution, function syntax, and to explain the factors causing Mandarin language is rich with classifier. This research was conducted with a qualitative-descriptive approach. The collection and provision of data is done by the method of observation and technical literature. The method used in data analysis is descriptive. The results showed that, classifier in Mandarin can be divided into nominal classifier and verbal classifer. The nominal classifier can be divided again into seven types, whereas verbal classifer can be divided into three types. Generally, distribution of nominal classifier is placed in front of the noun, but in the context of emphasizing quantity, noun would precede the classifier. Verbal classifier is in front of the verb if collocated with demonstrative pronoun, interrogative pronoun and direction word. When used with numeral, verbal claasifier mostly behind the verb, but to emphasize the frequency of event, it would be in front of the verb. Classifier phrase in the sentence can serve as a subject, predicate, object, attribute, adverbial and complement. As for why Mandarin is rich with classifier, from aspect of non-lingual, factor is related to the Hanzi (Chinese character) that make people more concerned with form and features of something, and wanted to get other information about it immediately from the character or language, so that nominal classifier is always needed, and the quantity is growing. From aspect of lingual, classifierâs main function is to form classifier phrase, and play an important role in connecting the classifier and noun or verb. In addition, making use of classifier make the qualifier for the noun more briefly.
