- The Negro Spirituals are the songs which contain spiritual theme and are used to express emotion, frustration, desperation and the bitterness of slave�s life in America. In these Negro Spirituals, there are many metaphors that are used by the slaves to express those feelings. The aims of this research are to describe the relation between tenor and vehicle of metaphors in the Negro Spirituals, to describe kinds of metaphor in the Negro Spirituals based on the semantic field theory, to describe the relation between metaphors in the Negro Spirituals and BA (Black American) culture (including life experience) and to describe the functions of metaphor in the Negro Spirituals. This research has been done by using qualitative descriptive method. This research method describes language text naturally based on corpus. Then, this text is analyzed in order to get the conclusion or the pattern. This research method consists of three steps, which are data collecting method, data analysis method and data analysis result presenting method. The results of this research show that each metaphor consists of three elements. Those elements are tenor, vehicle and ground. There are eight kinds of metaphor in the Negro Spirituals. They are being, cosmos, energy, terrestrial, object, living, animate and human. In addition, Black American culture influences the creation of metaphor in the Negro Spirituals. The results of the research also show that there are five functions of metaphor in the Negro Spirituals. They are metaphors that show the sadness, metaphors that show the anger, metaphors that show the faithfulness to the God metaphors that show the desperation and metaphors that show the hope.
