- Tonsillar hypertrophy is a condition commonly occurred in children that can result to mouth breathing. Chronic mouth breathing can influence the balance of dentofacial growth. The aim of this study was to determine whether there was significant difference of mid-lower anterior face height between tonsillar hypertrophy�mouth breathing subjects and non tonsillar hypertrophy�non mouth breathing subjects based on sex. In addition, the study also intended to determine the impact of tonsillar hypertrophy�mouth breathing to the increase of mid-lower face height. This comparative studies used cross sectional design. Seven to twelve years old javanese school children studied at 4 primary schools in Kasihan, Bantul, Yogyakarta was examined to assess their mid-lower anterior face height. Subjects were divided into 2 groups: group I (subjects with tonsillar hypertrophy � mouth breathing) and group II (subjects without tonsillar hypertrophy � non mouth breathing). The mean value of mid-lower anterior face height in both groups (males and females) was compared using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney test. Simple regression analysis was taken to find out the impact of tonsillar hypertrophy�mouth breathing to the increase of mid-lower facial height. The results showed that there is significant difference (p<0,05) between the groups (males and females). Tonsillar hypertrophy � mouth breathing significantly affect the increase of face height (p<0,05) of 7-12 years old children.
