- This research is aimed to analyze the Indonesian governments� role in enhancing the competitiveness of local wooden furniture industry in facing the competition among overseas furniture producers. Moreover, this research is focused on the policies issued by the governments in assisting the producers� upgrading process, and also eliminating the barriers and complexities faced by the producers in enhancing the competitiveness through upgrading process. Governance, Upgrading, and the concept of Global Value Chain will be the approach used as a tool to analyze this. This research uses qualitative method by using data from textbook, journal, newspaper and online articles, as well as many useful data from the internet. Besides that, as secondary sources, some interviews with the experts and the producers are conducted in order to obtain valid data. Afterward, the research discovers that the governments� efforts to enhance the local wooden furniture industries are limited. The policies issued by the governments are indeed assist the producers, but are not supportive enough to eliminate all the barriers and complexity faced by the producers in their attempts to upgrade their industry.
