  • This study examines the use of social networking as a strategy of public diplomacy of the United States that is run in Indonesia. The United States government termed such public diplomacy strategies as public diplomacy 2.0. Some analysis has shown the effectiveness of public diplomacy 2.0 that is carried out in Indonesia. Referring to those preliminary studies, this research try to perform further analysis. The question that will be answered in this research is: why United Stateâ��s public diplomacy 2.0 effectively implemented in Indonesia? to answer these questions, this study uses the theory of public sphere that is developed by Jurgen Habermas. Based on Habermasâ�� theory, this study found that the effectiveness of public diplomacy 2.0 emerged because Indonesiaâ��s social networking sphere has been transformed into an ideal public sphere. According to Habermas, ideal public sphere is the base to reproduce general political participation. Through public diplomacy 2.0 strategy, the U.S. diplomat utilize those social networking transformation.
