  • Background: Many children still consume supplement food although their needs for nutrient have been fulfilled. Use of supplements has become popular, yet its pattern of use is still unknown. Considering the increased use of supplements and risk of excessive micronutrient intake that children may encounter, it is necessary to study use of supplements in children. Objective: To identify use of supplements in preschool children in association with characteristics of mother as an individual that greatly affects use of supplement. The study also aimed to find out the difference in food intake and nutrition status of children that got supplement and those that did not get supplement. Method: The study was observational with case control study design. Respondents of the study were mothers that had preschool children (3-5 years) at private kindergarten of Bandar Lampung (n=159). Data were obtained from structured questionnaire and from of food recall 24 hours. Quantitative data were analyzed using chi square, t-test and logistic regression at confidence interval 95%, p>0.05. Result: The majority of children consumed supplement of multivitamin type (65.45%) once a day. Determinant factor of mother in the provision of supplement in children was media exposure as source of information. Mothers with high family income, low education, consumed supplement and had high motivation and tendency to give supplement to children. There was no difference between nutrition status and food intake of children that consumed supplement and those that did not (calculation without nutrient and supplement addition). Conclusion: Factor that was most influential to mother in the provision of supplement for children was media exposure. There was no difference between nutrient intake and nutrition status of children that consumed and did not consume supplement.
