- The decreased quantity and quality of existing public open space in urban areas has resulted in a deterioration of urban environment quality. Massive growth of urban housing makes urban public space becomes scarce. The Government of Yogyakarta City has targeted that in the year 2011, 45 villages in the city must have a public space owned by The City Government of Yogyakarta. This research aims to evaluate the provision, uses, and management of public space provided by the city goverment. This is an explanatory descriptive study done in 2 steps. First, a qualitative descriptive study was conducted to know the processes and management of public space. Secondly, a studywas done to examine the utilization of public space through field observation The reseach found that The Government of Yogyakarta City provides urban public space based on political, economic and social motivations. Such program is conducted jointly between the local community and government. The utilization of public space is quite good in terms of ecology, social and economic dimentions. However, efforts need to be strengthen to optimalize the uses of such public space.
