- City is a symbol of civilization, the level of which can be understood from the physical complexity and the social structure of the urban inhabitants. Public open space is one of the urban elements with some values, including ecological values, psychological values, socio-cultural values, economic values, and aesthetic values. All values is undergoing both continuity and change with all consequences that follow. The changes in public open spaces can influence the characteristics of the urban areas, which can be identified such as through a morphological analysis. This research elaborates the changes in characteristics of the Karebosi area as one of the urban open spaces in Makassar Municipality, viewed from spatial and historical aspects. The method employed was qualitative method to explain the sequential period of its development. The results of the analysis at the macro scale show that the development of the area into private and commercial uses are no more pertinent to the local cultural values. The urban design guideline resulted from this research consists of: (a) the way of anticipating the possibilities of the increasing area of permanent spaces in the area
